For decades, Aretha Franklin's voice belted out songs of change and joy. She was known as the 'Queen of Soul.'

An Arkansas record producer who helped Aretha find fame remembered his long-time friend after news of her passing on Thursday.

Al Bell first met Aretha Franklin when her first single came out. He was a radio disk jockey and booked and promoted gospel talent for concerts.

Bell said he'll never forget the first time he announced her on stage.

"The men and women applauded her and as she started to sing, the rest is history," Bell said. "That is the Aretha I fell in love with then. She became a dear, dear friend and someone I respected and still respect and admire today."

Bell believes her contributions to music will be felt for generations.
