A Camden police officer's toddler son died after he found a pistol at their home and accidentally shot himself Thursday morning, police reported.

Officers were called at 12:53 a.m. to the home at 1516 Copeland St., where they found Jessica Faulkner in the living room holding her 3-year-old son, the department said in a news release. Faulkner reportedly said she and her son were alone in the home when she went to the restroom and heard a gunshot. She then found her son lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to his head. The child was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said it appears that the toddler found the loaded pistol in a back room of the home.

The release identifies Camden police officer Alec Faulkner as the boy's father. He was on duty when the shooting happened.

Camden police and Arkansas State Police are investigating.
