Department of Health reports 3 West Nile cases in Arkansas
LITTLE ROCK (KATV) —
The Arkansas Department of Health says there have been three cases of West Nile virus reported in the state so far in 2018.
In 2017, the state reported 18 cases of the mosquito-borne disease.
According to the department's website, more than 30,000 people across the nation have been infected by West Nile virus since 1999, with nearly 13,000 of those individuals becoming seriously ill.
The department says about 80 percent of people infected with the virus won't show symptoms, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says about one in five people who are infected develop more mild symptoms.
The CDC reports most cases occur during mosquito season, which starts in summer and continues into autumn.
