A man who volunteered as a youth worker at a northwest Arkansas church is facing charges for alleged sexual assault against a young girl, according to our content partner KFSM.

Derek Smittle, 30, was arrested for first-degree sexual assault. The Bentonville Police Department told KFSM that Smittle, who volunteered at First Baptist Centerton, is accused of having sexual relations with the girl.

The pastor tells KFSM that Smittle was not a youth pastor or in a position of authority or decision-making in the church.

Smittle was relieved of his duties at the church after being arrested.
