HUD awards $4.2 million to Arkansas homeless programs
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Thursday that it had awarded more than $4.2 million to homeless housing and service programs in Arkansas.
The department said the money was distributed to 26 programs in the state.
The funds are part of a record $2 billion the department is giving to homeless housing and service programs across the country.
Nationally, the number of people who were homeless on a given night last year was about 553,742, according to the department. That's an increase of 0.7 percent from 2016.
In Arkansas, about 2,467 people were homeless on a given night last year, an increase of 0.2 percent. The number of homeless veterans in Arkansas reportedly increased 7.7 percent.
