Man shoots at police officer; barricades himself in duplex
PINE BLUFF, Ark. (KATV) -- A man is behind bars after shooting at a Pine Bluff police officer early Saturday morning.
Officers were called out to Cypress Drive regarding a “suspicious man with a gun”.
Police say when an officer made contact with 49-year-old Robert Jones, he became aggressive, and fired his gun at the officer, missing, and hitting the police cruiser instead.
Jones then took off on foot and barricaded himself in a duplex on Circle Drive.
The family living in the duplex was evacuated, along with several other homes in the surrounding area.
Officers and SWAT spent about an hour and a half trying to negotiate with and coax Jones out of the building. When Jones didn’t cooperate, officers released tear gas into the building.
According to police, Jones then fired his gun several times out one of the windows of the duplex. Again, Jones’ shots never hit any officers or civilians in the area, according to police.
Later Jones surrendered, and with empty hands held up, exited the home.
“All we got back from him was a list of expletives. He would not actually establish a dialogue,” one Pine Bluff police officer said.
The only shots fired were those fired by Jones, according to police.
Police also say he was recently released on parole.
Jones has been booked into the Jefferson County Jail for aggravated assault.
