Officer-involved shooting results in death of 'armed' 17-year-old in Benton
BENTON (KATV) —
A 17-year-old who police say was armed with a handgun was shot and killed by a Benton Police Department officer Monday.
Benton PD got the call just before 11:45 a.m. about a family disturbance in the 1200 block of River Oaks, with a 17-year-old who had a handgun.
Responding officers were told the teen had fled into a wooded area near the home.
Officers were later able to find the teen in a nearby wooded area, where police say he failed to comply with officers, who told him to drop the gun.
Police then say he pointed the gun toward an officer, which led to the officer shooting at the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect involved has not yet been identified by police, and police say they don't expect to release the victim's name because he is a minor.
Police were able to find the gun they say was in the suspect's possession at the time of the shooting.
The officer involved has been put on administrative leave until the conclusion of an investigation, which is department policy.
Benton PD held a press conference about this fatal officer-involved shooting at Monday evening.
