Two-vehicle crash kills child in North Little Rock; witnesses say drivers were racing

A child was killed Wednesday afternoon in North Little Rock when two vehicles crashed during an apparent street race.

Officers were called at 12:20 p.m. to the crash at Riverfront Drive and Cypress Street downtown. Police said in a news release that four people were injured in the crash, two in each vehicle. The four were taken to area hospitals with "significant injuries."

The department said early Wednesday evening that a 12-year-old girl, Aniyah Dilworth, had died from her injuries.

Witnesses said the vehicles "appeared to be racing one another and were traveling at extremely high rates of speed" when the crash happened, according to the release.

Photos taken after the crash show a dark-colored vehicle that looks to have been sheared in half after it struck a utility pole. Skid marks travel from the eastbound lanes of Riverfront Drive onto a median and into the westbound lanes. Several trees in the median were knocked over.

Eastbound and westbound lanes of traffic in the area were closed after the crash and drivers were told to avoid the area. The department tweeted at 3 p.m. that the roadway had been re-opened.

Police did not immediately identify the others involved in the crash.

An investigation is ongoing.
