Missing couple's vehicle found down embankment in Pope County, wife pronounced dead
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (KATV) —
Arkansas State Police on Tuesday reported that a Silver Alert issued Monday for a missing Russellville couple had been deactivated.
Elizabeth Hopkins, 90, and her husband Lee Hopkins, 87, were reported missing Sunday morning after he checked her out of a local assisted living center for breakfast, authorities reported.
According to a State Police crash report, the couple was involved in an accident in Pope County. The vehicle was discovered just after 5 p.m. Tuesday, but authorities say they are not sure how long it had been there.
Police say Lee was driving northbound on State Highway 7 when he tried to negotiate a left hand curve, left the roadway, and went down an embankment, striking a tree. According to authorities, a passerby called in the wreck after seeing the wheels of the vehicle and noticing it had flipped.
Elizabeth was pronounced dead due to her injuries.
Lee has been taken to a local hospital for further treatment.
