Situation at Ouachita River Unit resolves with no injuries
The Arkansas Department of Correction says an inmate non-compliance issue at the Ouachita River Unit in Malvern has been resolved.
Public Information Officer Solomon Graves tells KATV the situation occurred Friday when inmates refused to go back to their barracks.
Authorities had to call in more guards, who were able to resolve the situation with no injuries.
Graves released this statement to KATV:
"Yesterday evening, a group of inmates in a general population barracks at the Ouachita River Correctional Unit in Malvern refused a direct order for a correctional officer to return to their cells for the night. That officer then called a supervisor, who upon arrival reinforced that order. The inmates remained non-compliant. In order to prevent the situation from escalating, the supervisor called for additional officers from within the Unit to respond to the barracks. Once the additional staff responded, the non-compliant inmates were removed from the barracks and placed in other housing areas within the Unit. No inmates were injured. No staff were injured. The Unit maintained normal operations throughout the evening, to include control/access to the aforementioned barracks."
The situation comes weeks after three correctional officers were attacked by inmates at two separate ADC facilities.
The Arkansas Department of Correction has implemented a plan to address safety concerns within the prison system after Gov. Asa Hutchinson asked for more safeguards within the system.
