SULPHUR ROCK, Ark. (AP) - School officials in Batesville say a junior high student was shot in the leg when a gun accidentally discharged inside of a private vehicle parked at the Sulphur Rock Magnet Elementary campus.
Batesville School District Superintendent Gary Anderson says the student was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The incident occurred Wednesday morning in the campus parking lot where older students board school buses, before the younger students arrived, he said.
The school's principal, Stacey Lindsey, says school resource officers responded at the school and Independence County Sheriff's officers responded to a nearby home where the student and another occupant of the car went after the shooting to call 911.
No one at the sheriff's office was available to answer questions Wednesday about the incident.
