Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with a homicide just outside the Pine Bluff city limits Wednesday morning.

Officials said the shooting happened shortly after midnight in the 8900 block of Via Lane.

Deputies said when they arrived, they located the body of 37-year-old Steve Ault lying in a nearby ditch with multiple gunshot wounds. Ault was pronounced dead on scene.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's office said the suspect, 33-year-old Jeremy Mickens, was located in the front yard of a neighboring residence where his girlfriend lives.

Mickens was immediately taken into custody without incident and is being held on probable cause for first-degree murder.

Ault's sister, Robin Franklin, tells KATV she didn't find out about her brother's murder until she saw it on social media.

"I went on Facebook at 1 o'clock in the morning, and somebody was writing rest in peace on my brother's wall...and I started calling around and I finally found out that he was here and so we rushed over here, they wouldn't let us see him, he was already passed," said Franklin.

Franklin also said she was told Ault may have gotten killed while trying to help someone, since he was known for helping even strangers she said.

"From what we've been told, yes he was helping someone else out in a situation they were in and he caught the brunt end of the deal and he paid with his life," she added.

The investigation is ongoing.
