The USS Little Rock was commissioned on Saturday on the Buffalo River in Buffalo New York.

Saturday's milestone officially places places the ship, which was designed and built by Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Fincantieri Marinette Marine, into active service.

Named in honor of the patriotic and hardworking citizens of Little Rock, LCS 9 was built at the Midwest’s only naval shipyard by a team of more than 12,500 people at 800 suppliers in 42 states.

She is the second U.S. Navy ship to bear the name of Arkansas' largest city, and is the first ship in the Navy’s 242-year history to be commissioned next to her decommissioned namesake.

The USS Little Rock is expected to deploy to the high seas later next year.
