Exit poll data on voter turnout revealed that married individuals favored the GOP during this year’s midterms, while unmarried women significantly favored Democrats.

Married men voted for Republicans 20% more than they did for Democrats. Single men also favored GOP candidates on the ballot, but by a much slimmer margin of 7%, according to CNN exit polls.

The same exit polls also showed married women favored the GOP by 14%.

Unmarried women, however, sided with Democrats a whopping 37% more than they did Republicans, according to CNN’s data, which was collected from 18,571 total respondents.

These numbers could be a good sign for the Democratic Party, considering trends from the U.S. Census Bureau show the unmarried population in the U.S. has been growing since the 1950’s.

Prior to 1950, nearly 80% of households consisted of married couples, according to The New York Times, but married people became the minority in the U.S. in 2010.

Critics have pointed the finger at Democrats, arguing they have been seeking to destroy the nuclear family and that, without it, childhood development suffers.

According to "Growing Up with a Single Parent: What Hurts, What Helps," a book written by Sara McLanahan and Gary Sandefur, children in single-parent homes have a higher risk of dropping out of high school.

The Heritage Foundation'sRobert E. Rector reported that, in 2011, three-fourths of welfare spending went to single-parent homes, pointing to how children in these types of households are often forced to grow up in tougher circumstances.

“One of the fascinating things about our ongoing political realignment is the massive political incentive Democrats have to keep women unmarried,” tweeted political commentator Mollie Hemmingway.

“The Democrats’ radical abortion and LGBTQ agenda coupled with their negligent governance of our cities makes perfect sense when you realize the destruction of the nuclear family and dependence on government welfare keeps the Democratic Party in power,” writer Jayme Chandler Franklin also said on Twitter.
