Sully Says: Spring game thoughts

I have never been prouder of a War Memorial crowd.

The weather as we approached kickoff time was even worse than predicted: low temps, a significant wind, and a little sleet. The perfect recipe for a Spring game disaster. But that wasn't the case.

The unofficial number was 7,000 fans. If Chad Morris had the time he would have personally thanked every fan at the stadium. This tweet from the Razorback football account following the game: "The passion our fans bring is incredible."

The quarterback battle appears to be real. Ty Storey seemed to run the offense more efficiently, but Cole Kelley looked to have the edge throwing the ball. Cole made a couple of nice back shoulder throws on Saturday.

The offense wasn't "Razorfast" on Saturday. We all have to remember that they are only 12 practices into what is a complete offensive overhaul. Coach Morris was pleased with the tempo but says they will go much faster.

This offense is all about creating mismatches and Coach Morris says the tight end position provides the greatest opportunities. Cheyenne O'Grady had both touchdown catches. Morris is also expecting big things from Jeremy Patton.

If I were handing out offensive game balls, they would probably go to La'Michael Pettway and Devwah Whaley. Pettway had a game-high six catches for 91 yards and Whaley had 62 yards on only eight carries. Pettway had the only "wow" play of the day, when he hauled in a long pass and then took a shot from Micah Smith. He held onto the ball for a big gain.

The defensive backs looked like the most impressive position group. Kamren Curl and Ryan Pulley set the tone with aggressive plays on the football. The first team defense did not allow a touchdown.

Defensive end Randy Ramsey had at least two sacks. Coach Morris believes Ramsey has a chance to be special.

The Hogs have a lot of players back on defense. Let's hope a year older makes them a year better.

So many questions as we head to the Fall.

Who will be the starting QB? Will that much-maligned offensive line (minus Frank Ragnow) develop into a solid unit? Will Pettway and Jared Cornelius emerge as the leaders in the wide receiver room? Freshman Micheal Woods was also very active on Saturday. Quality depth also appears to be an issue at several positions.

I've learned over the years to not put much stock in the Spring game, especially when you have a new coaching staff.

Morris said something during our special on Friday night that stuck with me. Coach said he represents "hope" for a hungry fan base. I can't wait to see what this team looks like come late August.
